Springtime in Alabama

Finally spring is here. These little bluets are proof.

This is the Rock Mountain Fire Tower. The mountaintop is 800 feet above sea level. It is an 80 foot drop straight off the bluff.

Rattlesnakes will soon be hiding in the crevices of rocks in places like this. Rattlesnake hunters will be turning over rocks looking for them. I'll just leave them alone and hope I don't step on one. I walked up on two last summer.

Kathy searching for arrowheads.

She didn't find any there, but did spot this a few minutes earlier on a hillside. The eight inches of rain we got washed it down the hill.

She also found this tip.

That one is very thin. Had it not been broken, it would have been a spectacular piece. Still a nice find. It was in a ditch. Another rain would have probably covered it with mud.

Nearby to those finds, I saw this on a pile of dirt.

These are commonly called bird points, but they weren't used to kill birds. They were arrowheads, fashioned to fit on the end of an arrow, but they were used to kill game as big as deer.
